REAL PEACENIKS DON'T CHOOSE A SIDE

A while back a man I met, who was an important person in a Peace nonprofit, invited me to go along with him to one of their events. It was at a beach city rather far away and he promised he would provide transportation and get me back home on time, which was important to me because I'd agreed to pet sit for some other friends who were leaving town that evening. 

He did come and get me and he did get lost on the way and he did drive through an area that posted that there was no parking, so security guards gave chase, but he got a space near their set up. ***

Soon I realized two things. One was that I was expected to volunteer rather than just sit there and listen to some speakers. And I was through volunteering. Second that it was assumed that, without really knowing anything about this Peace nonprofit, I was joining them. No, I was just checking them out. Along for the ride.

At one point they got a group to take hand made posters on a walk-around because they had heard media would be there. I kept sitting under a tent. I didn't like hearing that locals called them Anti-American, but that was not my beef with them.

It was that a woman speaker, who I'd known about from another setting, tied Peace into Vegetarianism (or as that Veganism?) and not eating beef.

Yet, as a chiropractor once told me, we have carnivore teeth and carnivore intestines.

Yet, hunger and starvation are so common on this earth that I can never put someone down if all they eat is what they can afford; five for a dollar instant noodles, 7/11 hot dogs, cat food without owning one, dandelions and mud. **

I hate it when I hear people talking The Liberal Mob but in this case it really as. What, I asked myself, was that walk-around actually doing to create Peace? Nothing! These people were calling attention to themselves as superior in knowledge and intelligence.

Since then the war between Israel and Iran broke out, on top of the war between Russia and Ukraine. And the man starting tucking a Palestinian flag into his hat just to become a walking advertisement and sided with them or, you could say, Iran. Yes, this broke our friendship.

This was followed by my sudden understanding that the small group of protesters that proudly gathered on a street corner every Friday night so cars going by them could honk had also sided with the Palestinians. And the above mentioned woman speaker who tied Peace into not eating beef was one of them and had also wrote a letter to the editor of a small liberal newspaper and he, a Jew, published it.

Ah... choosing sides and cheering for ANYONE committing war is NOT the ideology of a REAL PEACENIK! Destruction is evil. It doesn't matter who has started it or who is doing furthering it, or who is winning. It's a horror upon this earth. It wastes people's lives. I have no way to cause PEACE ON EARTH but I do wish for it. And there's that song that goes "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me."

It's not easy to restart a homeland.

You do not have to be Jewish or even like Jewish individuals or culture to understand WHY there's an Israel. "Complications" have been pointed out to me such as that there are so far fewer Jews than Moslems, or that biblical prophecy says God gave Jews their homeland back after centuries of wandering, but, true or not, when it comes right down to it, people like me think who we're looking at when we see Pro Palestinian protesters on street corners is...

NEO NAZIS

That makes us very uncomfortable.

We know there was a Holocaust in Europe in World War II. (And we do not look forward to World War III and do not believe in End Times and The Rapture.) We know Jews were blamed for a bad German economy and ours is failing. We know Adolph Hitler was a mesmerizing speaker and that at rallies people were excited by his message just like some are excited by President Trump's. We know dehumanization started with comparing Jews to rats, and people started believing they were not humans but needed to be exterminated. And we know that the murders started with people who were disabled in care homes, people who were gay, people who were dependent on the state for income being euthanized as undesirables for their weakness and expensive dependency; our homeless could be next. We know this one:

"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

According to AI, "This is a famous passage from a sermon by German pastor Martin Niemöller. It is a powerful statement about the dangers of indifference and apathy in the face of oppression and the moral interconnectedness of all people."

Am I saying that no Jew is at fault for furthering war? Hell no. But, a real PEACENIK doesn't cheer when buildings fall and innocents lay under them. They aren't watching the media and yelling "Kill them all!" If you're for PEACE, you'll suggest trying to come to an agreement or staying out of each other's way until another agreement can be reached.

The Friday corner protesters are especially horrible because that neighborhood is full of Italians who have Jewish roots. So in that way it becomes a small town spectacle designed to aggravate and since when does a protest for PEACE turn out to be so passive aggressive if not obviously violent?

Don't think I'm claiming to be a PEACENIK but I sure am trying to be. I'm reminded that there is no glory or beauty in what's going on in these wars. These wars are ecological disasters for the whole planet and have and will effect all participants negatively, especially the children, for generations forward. In those ways there is no winning.

** It used to be said that it was less expensive to be vegetarian due to the price of meat but I don't think that's true anymore.  My experience with vegetarians is that they have become a new elite due to the affordability of expensive supplements as well as the cost of organics and other "special" foods. 

In Los Angeles one child in five goes to bed hungry.  School lunches are sometimes a child's only meal.

"I know what it is.  Ever see the movie Independence Day?.... Harley believed the drones buzzing around New Jersey (but also now many other locations) were launched by aliens from another planet.

I had, in a theatre, in 1996, gone to see that movie. I was in college. I needed a study break.  I went to the theatre in the middle of the afternoon by myself. I thought I was in for a film about the American Revolution. 

As the mothership launched babyships, as the sparce audience tried on what it would be to look up and see the sun blotted out by massive black UFO's that could obliterate the White House with one fire beam and was predictably filled with demonic creatures, I sat back and also realized that the film was a masterpiece of screen writing. Rare for a fast action film, and a film with a large cast of characters, the screenwriters had managed to give each character enough dialogue for us to get to know them. Best, every "story" of these characters managed to have a beginning, middle, and end, and each of them some success, even if that meant dying loved. When the crop-duster Viet Nam vet, Russel, who couldn't even spray the right field, and who had been an embarrassment to his children, volunteered to be the hero who would fly the American space-jet right into the mothership, which meant his death when it exploded, I think the whole audience felt they could relate to this "every man" who had photos of his kids on the dashboard.

Oh, and that scene in which some Arabs on walkie talkies (or were those cell phones?) says "It's the Americans!" (who had the plan that was going to save the world) in the very front row, in uniform, a row of American soldiers on leave stood up and gave victory fists to the screen.

Ah yes, "The Americans!"  We The People... The preamble to the American constitution, which I'd memorized in the fifth grade"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

All weekend I watched drone coverage. One expert said that drones were worthless when it came to filming or photos at night (and don't we have the International Space Station?) but were good at sniffing for gas leaks or radiation. Another said they appeared to be American made. Reports of thirty of them coming off the set towards land made fears of a "mothership" - possibly Chinese or Russian, maybe North Korean, or even Iranian were real. Reports of wing-spans of six feet or eight feet, the size of cars - Volkswagen Beetles perhaps - which, if shot down, might crash and squash houses and humans - were truly scary. These drones are, reportedly, much faster than the ones we manufacture and, therefore, they escape from the drones we do. Also, the cost estimates of what it might take to actually manufacture them and fly them, especially when they show up in hoards, is in the millions, so this could be one very expensive hoax.

"Damn it, why doesn't Biden just shoot them out of the sky!" yelled my Republican friend. 

The GOP hearings on what the protocol might be for shooting them down happened.

In my opinion these drones ARE A THREAT to the normal functioning of airports and flight and the SHOULD be taken down. They are ALSO A THREAT TO OUR DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY. And therefore, what I would do - since most likely someone is watching and hearing the TERROR they are causing - should be given a warning.  And then, carefully, sadly so for the creatures of the sea and the ecosphere of the ocean, we should shoot them down over it.

But where I differ from many, is that I STILL TRUST THAT OUR GOVERNMENT and OUR MILITARY AS A FUNCTION OF THAT GOVERNMENT, aims to protect us, especially from invasions and war on our land.

I think of the courageous civilians of the Ukraine, who have had to defend themselves from Russia's attack upon them, a war so far from the tradition of the battlefield... I can say that I could never ever deal with such an invasion. So, if they are hesitant to tell us things that would put our spies in danger, I get it. If those drones carry micro nuclear devices that would blow if shot down and they don't want us to know it, I get it. The drones are very likely Human-made. If they are being piloted by aliens from another planet...

UKRAINE AND RUSSIA : WHAT WE DON'T GET ABOUT RUSSIA

RUSSIA is so huge that it expands through ELEVEN TIME ZONES.  All that land, all that space, but it wants Ukraine, which is the size (square miles not shape) of our state of TEXAS.

Why not use the billions of dollars dedicated to destroying UKRAINE and UKRAINIANS to build a new city within Russia, improve infrastructure, and so on?  (Pick a good spot and build an all new city!)

Why do Russians have no apparent concern about a generation (or two) of young men being wiped out, leaving Russian women with fewer men to partner and mate with?

What seems "good" about Ukraine actually going into Russia to advance their cause?

We do not believe that the Russian people actually realize what is going on. We think the information they are being given is not honest and many of them may not understand what's been happening. Hard to believe, we know, but that's what we think.  As Ukraine goes after bridges and military targets, never the less the strikes within Russia INFORM the Russian people, YES THIS IS A WAR. 

Are the Russian people without an opinion?

We hope for an end to the violence, the ecological disaster, and a comfortable peace between the two countries.

Will humanity every progress past war?  Is technology allowing humans to kill others without feeling, as if it were all just a video game?

RUSSIAN SOLDIERS COMMIT AUTROCITIES : THE HOMELESS ARE OUR REFUGEES FIRST : THE RACE FOR LOS ANGELES MAYOR

I've been dog/ house sitting the last few days.  Friends headed north for a long weekend.  A much needed change of scene and pace.  I sure hope they come home renewed.  

I'm caring for their dog along with mine, both oldsters. Theirs is more peppy. I love their dog despite her many bad habits that they never expect her to change. One day when I had to be away, I came back to find my dog, unused to me being away for so long, had been sitting by their gate and crying with anguish for hours. I saw that their dog was beside her, however, and as I came through, their dog used her nose to tap the face of my dog, to comfort her and say, "There she is. I told you she would come back. You have not been abandoned." Their dog is aware that my dog is going blind. Their dog held out faith that I would return, watched for me, was there for her. So how can I hold it against their dog that, after I gave both of them baths, she ran for the freshly laundered bed that belong to my dog, and spread herself out on it? Leaving my dog on the floor. That she runs for my dog's food if my dog stops eating for a moment? That she is fat and mine is too thin. Mine gives her warning barks about the food.  Mine barks a lot to tell on her when she is invading to get treats.

I hold their dog and I tell her that I know that she starved in a past life.  I hold their dog and tell her that I know that she poops and pees on their bathroom floor to make a point: she is actually a human and humans do use that room to do their business. 

Right now the two of them are trying to distract me from writing by tail wagging in hopes of walks and food. "When I finish my essay!"

Outside birds are chirping. An early spring nest, perhaps, is in their tree. It is a cold morning. I'm under the covers and don't feel like starting my day. I'm enjoying the quietude of a house empty but for me and these dogs, at least until the end of the day when they return.  I'm fortunate in that way.

Do I, you wonder, write every day?  Have some sort of routine or schedule for writing?  Overall, the answer is no. I do write often.  I do write for hours. I do still hand write, though I get more done typing. I don't publish on this blog or elsewhere most of what I write.  Some of it is just for me. Some of it is experimental.  I wrote a short short the other day, the first time in a long time that I wrote a short short. 

I remember in my writing program there was a student who wrote a children's book that I thought was charming in its imagery.  This student was warned by the university that he needed to get on with finishing his projects as he had acquired too many units and might have to go without completing a degree.  He was procrastinating his final paper.  He was in therapy for writer's block.  (Probably also he was procrastinating because he knew that once he graduated he would probably have to move somewhere and find a job.)

I could not imagine that. I think, however, that many writers are suffering the specter of Cancel Culture, of being told that they may not write about something they imagine or research, that they must stick to what they "know."  Imagination and research are being cancelled in favor of testimonials. Cancel Culture has been brewing for at least twenty years at college campuses.

Ideas come to me all the time. Often I forget the idea because it comes to me at a time when I can't stop what I'm doing at the time in favor of writing. It is like forgetting a dream one just woke from, knowing it was a memorable dream.  You hope you will dream it again.

The first thing I do these days, before I'm even out of bed, is check the news.  Specifically the hard news, the war in Ukraine. The atrocities of war crimes committed by soldiers of the Russian army against civilians.  I wish the Power of Hate worked like magic because I despise them, I loath them, I want them all to spontaneously combust from their own evil.  I want them to get the hell out of Ukraine. (I wish I could be more spiritual about this.  I watched the Pope's Consecration of Ukraine and Russia - careful to include all the countries in the world - with interest. Will that white magic work?)

The torture, the rape, the mass graves that testify that genocide is being committed, make me feel upset and also helpless and hopeless but I feel - maybe you do too - that not knowing would be worse.  I'm so impressed with the way so many millions of people have been giving of themselves to help others but a question I have is, how can we collectively continue to afford this?  Is my imagination too small? Have I no idea just how rich, rich is?  

Well, what about our refugees here in the United States, the homeless? 

Years ago I was told that anyone without a permanent address is considered homeless. I was surprised because, like many people who immigrated to Southern California as the land of opportunity from other parts of the United States, I relied on others who had moved here first to receive me and shelter me until I could find a job and my own apartment. I was three different places before that happened, though I did make it happen within three months. At the time there was a feeling of optimism in the air, that there was enough for everyone.  People still walked into places they wanted to work to apply in person.  People might find jobs other ways, such as personal networking, but I didn't have a network.  When I walked into a place that was not hiring, and people actually told me about other places that were hiring. 

I also relied on the kindness of a friend after graduating from college and having nowhere to live immediately. I had other 'friends' who could have taken a turn to have me, giving her a break during those months, but they were nowhere to be found. (And living in houses that their parents made possible.)

(If you are wondering, I've senselessly given, even to people who I came to understand were clearly not respecting me, within my means.)

However, now I'm hearing that agencies do not consider people who are sofa hopping or staying with other people temporarily, or even those who live in RV's, vans, and cars, to be homeless. No, now homeless means on the pavement.  I met a woman dog walking who told me that she had been sofa hopping for several years without any hope of help from these agencies.  By redefining, the count is actually lower than it could be.

Also the count is always an under-count and was suspended during Covid. I know the people I'm going to mention further in this post were not counted and do not want to be.

I currently know two people who have been living in vehicles for years, getting Social Security, who are terminally ill and wasting away. One is in stage 4 cancer. They are both rugged individualists and have some connection with others for the purposes of mail and showers.  One has been helped by an AA group though he has not been a member for many years. The other is still performing whenever possible. 

I currently know of four people who are staying overnight in a business where they work, with permission of the owner.  I know this because I'm one of the 'in-crowd.'  Two of them need surgery.

Out walking dogs I go to a park where there are people in tents, waiting on living in one of those tiny house villages. 

I hear my old neighborhood has a long stretch of tents.

Pre-Covid there was a woman who had two shopping carts that she would move several times each day, going from bus stop to bus stop, I suppose so as to not be accused of loitering. We would stop and talk to her and she would pet my dog.  I haven't seen her and hope she got in somewhere.  Whatever her mental illness might have been, she had clarity when we interacted.

There were also two individuals that I was so concerned about, I filled in one of those outreach forms on line. The one man decided to sit on a bench near a store and he sat in that same spot, but for going into the store to buy food and use the toilet, day and night for months, in the cold, in the overnight rain, when he would spread some plastic over himself. I spoke to him and he smiled and was mild mannered.  I learned other people were also concerned and trying to get him help. He is not there anymore. However, the other man I reported as needing help was far gone. He roamed wearing nothing but sweat pants and one morning as we were walking to the store, he proceeded to pull the pants down, squat, and openly take a shit. 

As I see people in Canada, a country in which previous Ukrainian immigrants have proven themselves, especially welcoming in any and all who want to come there, I'm impressed. I reason that Canada has space and that Ukrainians are already used to living in a cold climate. (Manitoa -15%, Sadkatchewan -13%, Alberta -10 % , Yukon -5%, British Columbia  5f% and Ontario - 3%)

On YouTube I saw an interview with one woman, who spoke with an American accent, who was a Canadian living in Poland who had taken in ten Ukrainians fleeing that war.  Asked how long she expected them to live there, she said, at least a year, or as long as it takes.  Even if the war ended tomorrow, the damage to the human spirit - of having endured rape - gang rape - seeing your child killed - knowing your mother was hung - never seeing your brother or husband again - all these things are much to cope with. So about 4 million Ukrainians are now refugees.  I won't say 'get over' because I don't think people get over these experiences. I think 'closure' can be a lot of B.S.

So why do we think that mental illness comes first and then homelessness? When homelessness is not just tough, but dehumanizing.  When homeless women especially are the victims of rape? When sex traffickers prey upon homeless teens?  When not sleeping regularly and not being able to use the toilet when you need to can ruin your health?  

What of those who commit these crimes? It is easy for me to think they are not operating with a soul.  Are they human?  Well then, I don't like humans.  There's a theory that rather than eternal damnation, a person must earn their soul while on this earth and when a person does such things, upon their mortal death they do not obtain eternal life, they are gone, blank. 

Which brings me to the promise of the title of this post.  The race to be elected mayor of Los Angeles.  As of yesterday Mayor Garcetti had not been approved to be ambassador to India.  (India is not willing or able to go without Russian oil.) 

I watched the debate with interest.

Rich Caruso, the millionaire property developer, has ads coming up on YouTube videos. He claims he will solve the homeless issue. It is impossible for me to believe him.  (I think there is corruption in City Hall because developers seem to get away with a whole lot.) This cannot happen unless a half a million apartments that average people can afford are build in Los Angeles County yesterday.  Average people are all in the pipeline towards homelessness. (Anyone on EBT is in that pipeline.)

It is possible for someone who develops property to care, but as I see it, unless he has detailed plan on how he expects to do this revealed soon, we can be pretty sure he will not solve the issue.

Mike Feuer is someone I briefly interacted with a few years ago and I was directed to fill out a form with one of his office personnel who was to get back to me.  No one got back to me. That said, he had the experience to take on the job, and frankly, has had a good reputation overall.

Around that time that I met Feuer, though I prefer snail mail, I e-mailed the same letter to every person on the Los Angeles City Council but for one.  The letter focused on the homeless issue as I witnessed whole families coming into a library asking the librarians for help on finding housing. These people were mostly in older and small buildings in the Valley area, were mostly of Mexican heritage, and that summer there were also many families on floors of friends and sleeping in cars around libraries and parks. There was a program in areas where young people were joining gangs and in an attempt to deter this, there were weeks where food was served nightly along with basic entertainments and things to do. I went one day to see how this was going and various politicians had booths set up. I spoke to the teens who were hired to cook, set up tables, and so on, and basically, there were homeless families there night after night.

Not a single member of city council got back to me, two people who worked for two of them sent an email back asking me what I wanted.  I said "If you read my letter you would know."  My impression was that LA City Council did not give a rats ass.

Joe Busciano appeals to home owners and those who think human beings in encampments need to be "cleaned out" and basically evicted from where they have planted themselves as they are 'moved.'  We need to equate this with what happens in war - forced migration - loss of personal property.  Not a chance in hell I will vote for him.

Karen Bass was a gentlewoman at the debate while the men pretended to love each other and be friends, while also slinging mud.  However, this may have come off as too timid. I will be learning more about her in the next few weeks.

I also do not know enough about Kevin DeLeon.

So right now Mike Feuer has my vote.

MARIA PRYMACHENKO : ART WORK DESTROYED : RUSSIAN DESTROYING CULTURE


Found this video this morning and found it to be very important. An artist who never sold a work but was honored for her cultural contribution in Ukraine, Maria Prymachenko, had work in a small cultural museum.  A man risked his life to save a few of the works there.

A MOMENT OF FEELING PROUD OF MY POLISH ANCESTRY : I'M BROUGHT TO TEARS

Although I realize that other countries have taken in Ukrainian refugees, as I watch the videos of the Polish people giving so much of themselves, I'm brought to tears at their kindness and generosity, for the nobility of their personal sacrifice in order to save the lives of others. They did not hesitate because it is only right. Yet no country and very few individuals have unlimited resources.

So many have opened their homes and rolled up their sleeves.

A man who owns a car dealership spent over $100,000 of his personal money to buy a bus and other vehicles that he is using to drive into Ukraine and bring people into Poland. One is fortified to withstand impacts, yet he is risking his life in this action.

These are the kind of people you want in your life.  The kind of people you want to know.  Even if you never want or need for anything yourself from them.

Not the people who's personal value in life is the value of their real estate. Not those who, upon meeting you, ask you questions intended to figure your net worth. Not the people who can't resist name dropping who they know.  Who have lost all humility. Not the snobs who put their noses up in the air. (I sometimes think they must be trying to avoid their own stink.) 

Krakow and Warsaw are overwhelmed and more people, more countries must step up.  Think about how much populations have shifted due to war. I do hope it will be only temporary but the things these people have experienced already, the fear, the panic, the running, the sounds of bombing, the sirens wailing, the water and food shortages, standing on packed trains for 10 hours, the exhaustion,  the desperation, the not knowing where one will end up or how to settle, will be with them. 

I want the personal wealth of the oligarchs to be used to rebuild Ukraine.

YEVGENIA ALBATS - INDEPENDENT JOURNALIST IN RUSSIA - STAYING IN RUSSIA TO REPORT

VEVGENIA ALBATS, an Independent Journalist, recently decided to stay in Russia and report on YouTube, even though CNN pulled out. I will leave it to you to search YouTube with her name to get to her channel. She is broadcasting in Russian. You may be able to get the Closed Caption working if you don't speak Russian. In an interview she said that she is being careful, that she does not want to be arrested. Protesters including television broadcasters and journalists, who felt or knew that they were providing false information as news, have quit, or fled, or been arrested.

Ukraine the land of bread and wheat.  Even in Egypt, bread and cakes are baked using Ukrainian flour.  It;s the time of year to prepare the fields for sowing, but this work is not being done.  The soil of the wheat fields is full of metal - fragments of shells, pieces of blown-up tanks and cars, the remains of downed planes and helicopters.  And it's all covered in blood.  The blood of Russian soldiers who do not understand what they are fighting for, and the blood of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians who know that if they do not fight, Ukraine will no longer exist.  In its place there will be a cemetery with a caretaker's hut and some kind of governor general send from Russia will sit and guard it.

SHORTWAVE RADIO BROADCASTS INTO UKRAINE INFORMATION


The BBC is using WWII technology to get news and information into Ukraine.

The BBC is using shortwave radio broadcasts which are in English. This is in response to programing by various news outlets including Voice of America and the BBC itself being shut down by the Russian Government.


15735 kHz is the band to use from 4 PM to 6 PM Ukraine time

5875 kHz is the band to use from 10 PM to 12 PM Ukraine time.

RUSSIAN OLIGARCHES HIGHTAIL IT ON THEIR SUPERYACHTS - GREAT BRITAIN NUMBER ONE PLACE WHERE BANKS LAUNDER THAT MONEY

A spate of news articles and YouTube videos: One, this morning, said that there was evidence (I suppose surveillance from above) that a number of Russian Oligarches are heading back to Russian on their Super Yachts. I WONDER IF THEY WILL STOP IN MONACO?

I reason that they might not be on the boats at all. 

The idea is to get them back to home turf where they cannot be seized.

Watched a video of Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressing the issues, most about Ukraine, some local, and thought it was wonderful that one of the Members of Parliament, brought up that GREAT BRITAIN IS THE NUMBER ONE PLACE THAT CORRUPT RUSSIANS LAUNDER MONEY THROUGH THE BANKS THERE.  

Fantastic!

Wish I was familiar with the face and names.

I WAS IMPRESSED WITH HOW TO THE POINT THE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT WERE AND HOW RAPID THE PROCEEDINGS. JOHNSON DID NOT BLINK. HE WAS PREPARED OR ABLE TO ADDRESS EACH AND EVERY QUESTION.

Contrast this a bit with watching a full video of President Joseph Biden's State of the Union Address and the members of Congress. Let us say that there is also a protocol such as a number of people called to escort the President to the podium.  I was dismayed at the disorder and lack of formality most of these people had prior to the proceedings.  WAS THIS A COCKTAIL PARTY?  The only people who showed respect - not just for our President - but for the importance of this speech to the United States and the World were the Supreme Court Justices and Military.

Some of these people were on their cell phones.

Could they not conduct personal business out in the hall or afterwards?

As for his speech, it is true that sometimes Biden stumbles on words and we know that he has overcome a speech impediment in the past and this is not about aging. This is a kind of disability but it did not stop him from working hard and achieving.

Those who wish to condemn him on that basis should know that two of our best Presidents, Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy were significantly physically disabled which one hid and the other coped with prescription drugs. They were aware that they needed to hide these disabilities.  However, for those who are disabled, they show remarkable strength and fortitude.

SUNDAY MORNING SUN DEFIES HORRORS OF WAR

THROUGH THE DRAPERIES OF MY BEDROOM COMES THE SUN.  Have to get up early to take my dog out.  Go back to bed.  Snuggle for warmth. Have to go to the store for groceries this morning. Don't feel like getting dressed. Would like to read one of the books I ordered in but have been watching one YouTube video after another to follow developments and listen to opinions about what's happening in Ukraine.  Of course I support Democracy over Dictatorship. 

Musk links Ukraine to the Internet from space.

McCain was right.

Our intelligence was right. 

Thinking of various people I've met over the last couple years - in stores, in coffee houses, taking walks... who informed me that they did not TRUST our government.

Walmart dog food isle:  Man and his wife and I start talking about all the dog food coming in from China on those backed-up ships and dog food shortages and prices going up.  Start talking about nonprofit groups that spay and neuter at no charge. Man says they called everywhere after having cats and dogs - kittens and puppies - arrive to their yard.  Have you tried Sam Simon? Conversation, lead by husband, turns to why they are not wearing masks, not taking vaccinations, and fast forwards to his list of governmental agencies you cannot trust.  His list includes the FBI.  "They are all corrupt," He says.

I know I have to get out of the conversation at that point.

I still think the United States of America is the best.

I wish them a good day and move on.

On my list of things to buy today is dog food.

I see the film of refugees heading for the Polish border especially and people in their winter coats and hats, pulling wheeled suitcases, and some of them have brought their pets along.

My human in a dog's disguise is sleeping a lot.  Some days she wants to half run around the block, some days she doesn't want to get out of bed, or goes right back in...

Has Putin gone mad?

MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT : LOOSE CANNONS : TALKING TO STRANGERS

Went to the library to order in some books. A memoir and a biography.  It seems these are the two genre's I read mostly these days.  Distanced from fiction.

But every few hours I check the news on the war being staged in UKRAINE.

I try to imagine what it would be like if there was combat in the streets here.  If apartment buildings were being hit by missiles here.  If thousands of women and children were taking shelter in the subways, without food and water. If men eighteen to sixty were told they must not leave the country but must stay and fight in any way they can. 

Reports that Putin is actually mentally ill.  Suggestions that he has been affected by a Covid infection - something wrong with his brain - not thinking straight.  Notions that he wants to recreate the Soviet Union as his last effort before he leaves office.  Notions that he will never resign or retire.

At the library there was a woman who told me that she had just gotten out of a mental hospital. She said so much was going wrong in her life that she just couldn't take it any more.  She's been trying to find her adult son.  She suggested that he was involved in criminality and was an addict.  She had to find him.   He was somewhere in LA. I had to wonder if he was the main cause of mental distress or if she hoped he would help her.  Too many people lost to the maze of drug addiction.  Too many criminals, sociopaths, who deliberately seek out those who need escape, to hook them, to traffic them.  Too much evil.

A boom goes off in the neighborhood.

Somewhere down the street - possibly in a house - there is someone who likes to shoot off something once in a while.  A gun or perhaps something in the category of a firework. This person always does this at the exact top of an hour.  I imagine this person to be a man and imagine the man going outside into a yard. And usually at a time when many people are sleeping. Just one loud and unexpected boom.

Does he feel relieved after he destroys the sleep of others?  Is he discharging an emotion?

Is he someone who should be bearing arms?

"I feel overwhelmed," I said to the woman at the library.  "It's all so much bigger than me."

On the walk home I encountered some workman blocking a sidewalk in front of a house that looked like it needed some refurbishing.  Old trees had been beheaded months ago and their trunks stood in front of the house. I asked a man," Are the trees dead? Is there any sign that they are going to sprout?"

"It's been six months.  No leaves," he said in accented English.

We agreed that the trees were too traumatized from beheading to be alive.

"Where are you from?"

"Hungary."

The man told me he had gone back and forth to Hungary for some years and then one day he realized he was not going back.  He was from the southern part and had been born in what is now Yugoslavia.  He talked about Hungary being chopped after World War II, so that it's now one third the size that it was before.

I knew about that.

"Do you think refugees from UKRAINE are going to flood into Hungary?"

"No, they will go into Romania.  The border with Hungary is small.  Romania," he said.

What is it like to flee with nothing but a rolling suitcase, not knowing where you will be safe, where you will sleep, where you will find a bathroom when you have to use one? 

Here in America, our refugees are the homeless.

One place to go is the library.
