I don't know about you, but I've been following the Julian Assange Ordeal/Case/Travesty for five years and while I have mixed thoughts and feelings about the man, Wikileaks, rape accusations, and even Vegetarian Pam's visits over there to Julian in London, I'm still not bored.
Anyone who has ever studied Journalism or who is watching the demise of paper books and paper news can't help but be fascinated by someone who calls Journalism "Transparency" ; is nothing private?
The thing that now fascinates me the MOST is that the man still has not cracked up, though I think there are lots of people who wish he would. He seems to have been made into an example to the world; see what will happen to you if you go against us and have strong opinions or openly publish our personal business! (One of the things you learn in Journalism at college is that private persons are not news unless they are involved in something exceptional. Public personalities have far less privacy.) Of course, he is actually NOT BEING HELD AGAINST HIS WILL. It is his will to evade arrest, if not for rape then some other crime, BY NOT WALKING THE HELL OUT OF THERE!
If you've read hundreds of articles about Julian in the embassy as I have, then you know that he is not well physically. He has less movement freedom than someone in a typical jail where they get to go out into the yard for exercise and sunlight for an hour a day.
As for his vitamin e deficiencies from lack of sunlight, there are those who say to go get a sunlamp (we think they mean full spectrum,) or some daily multiple vitimins. Can't a dentist visit him and pull that tooth?
Recently Assange was cut off from using the Internet by his Ecuadorian hosts because they fear that his OPINIONS will cause economic difficulties for their country's business and relationships with other countries. (Can't they do a disclaimer such as THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED BY JULIAN ASSANGE ARE NOT NECESSARILY THOSE OF HIS HOSTS?) WORSE, he is really going to feel his isolation because he is also NO LONGER ALLOWED TO HAVE LIVE VISITS FROM ANYONE. (Can you even imagine what Vegetarian Pam will be wearing when she talks to some FBI agent in a raincoat?)
While the room in the embassy that he dwells in (with, perhaps, some privileges to walk the hall, use the bathroom, do some interviews in another room) is really is small, he was able to go through the window of the Internet into other worlds. Basically he is going to crack up and then maybe he will, when not in his right mind, walk on out, to handcuffs and photographers.
I am feeling his isolation because I'm a person who can't really stand to be indoors in a room in a house or a small apartment for more than a week. OK, I have once for sure, possibly twice, CHOSEN not to leave for a week or so because I was in a very deep zone of concentration and writing. I remained in flow for hours at a time, went to sleep, woke up in flow. It is possible. It is productive. But you could end up with carpal tunnel from a marathon typing session and you should have gone to the grocer and stocked up before you try it. Getting out into the sunlight and air is important to me.
There is one thing worse than being trapped in a place and that is being trapped in a body. I am no Steven Hawkings; let me die. I will not acclimate. I will be miserable. I will go insane if I have to be a conscious in a body I cannot control. Don't tell me about people who typed novels using a stylus attached to their nose.
If Assange has not yet cracked up officially, and maybe he is typing away in there without being able to post, if he continues to be isolated from all human contact but for the embassy staff, they are going to have worse problems than him not bathing or his going berserkers and trashing the room. (Both which have been reported though where's the proof? Tall book shelves have been known to detach from walls and when you no longer know for sure WHAT TIME IT IS, you may get off schedule when it comes to showers.)
I feel sorry enough for him as a human that I want to imagine that Vegetarian Pam and he have had their way with each other. I know he is pale and pasty, but this is a man who likes to dance to Rave Music and is no innocent when it comes to seduction. Why not?
